~The dulcet-voiced duo on the MIX FM Breakfast Show that keep Malaysia entertained with a steady patter of top-of-the-morning commentary mixed with a slick stream of musical hits shares how tech and social media have enhanced the radio star~

SHOUT!
How did you get started in show business?
Sarimah
When I was 18, a lady came up to me and asked me to audition for a toothpaste commercial. I got the part and was in several product commercials after that. I went on to star in a series of Malay movies and now I’m a radio DJ.
Rod
I have a background in stage work. I’ve done hosting, DJ’ing and also did a stint as an emcee though it was hard to maintain a family with my erratic work schedule. I auditioned for MIX FM and here I am now.
SHOUT!
What’s a typical day at work like?
Sarimah
Being on the Breakfast Show is like doing a TV show, though it’s a lot more challenging than singing, being on TV or acting. With radio, you have to paint images with only the sound of your voice. There has to be scripting, planning, follow ups…the works. I wake up at 3AM and reach the ofice by 4AM where we go over the day’s programme. At 6AM we go live.
Rod
Through the course of the show there’s a lot of social interaction as well; we need to be on top of current events, trends and music to keep listeners informed and entertained. Once our slot is over it’s back to planning for the next day’s work.
SHOUT!
What are the things in life that you can’t do without?
Sarimah
My loved ones come irst. Other than that it’s smartphone, my car and my cat Molly.
Rod
My wife and son both.
SHOUT!
Who was the most interesting guest that you’ve ever talked to on the show?
Sarimah
I’m a huge fan of Lifehouse. We got them in the studio one day and I sang a song to him, it’s called “Broken” and I nearly cried. It was a moving experience.
Rod
A girl called up from hospital. I sensed she was a potential suicide case and I kept interacting with her on the air and off to make sure she was alright for the whole day and a week afterwards. Two years later she called back thanking me for the time I spent with her.
SHOUT!
How do you think social media affects your work or changes it? Will radio remain relevant in an age of instant updates?
Sarimah
Social media is now an arm of radio rather than a distinct separate channel. Before social media became big on the scene, radio was just a distant voice that you tuned in to. With social media, there’s a whole new level of interactivity and there’s an immediacy to it that’s hard to top though it won’t render radio obsolete; not by far. We all still desire a human connection, listening to a real voice rather than just seeing a touchscreen. That’s where radio comes in. People still want to connect and hear and get to know personalities.
Rod
Not everyone can listen in and some listeners prefer to Tweet or use Facebook rather than tuning in so these social media channels act as a complementary channel for people to interact with us. Radio will be here for a long time to come folks.
